Adjustable box bed for children with disability

A box bed for children with disabilities… that doesn’t look stigmatizing. That was one of the most important goals of this project for Spring Productions. Box beds are used by care institutions and people at home to let children with (multiple) disabilities sleep or play in.

In the beginning of the project, Studio Rotor had several conversations with various parents of children with disabilities, ergo therapists and advisors. This gave a deep insight on the problems that parents and caretakers encounter each day.

Using these insights, Studio Rotor developed a number of concept directions, that look as much as possible like regular children’s beds. The definitive design has a protective shape and a calm white basis with wooden elements where people touch the bed the most. The mechanism for height adjustments is concealed in the side of the bed.
