Design & engineering of medical device for cataract surgery

Cassini Technologies, a provider and manufacturer of ophthalmic solutions, entrusted Studio Rotor to lead the mechanical design of their Cassini Guidance system – an advanced system that assists in cataract surgery within the operating room.

Leading in mechanical design and engineering

Studio Rotor led the mechanical design and engineering of the system, encompassing both the external enclosure and internal component mounting architecture.

Develop comprehensive solutions

Under the technical direction of Cassini’s product team, we developed comprehensive mechanical solutions that prioritized maintenance access, component integration, cooling requirements, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), while ensuring compliance with medical device regulations.

From concept to production-ready mechanical design

We were entrusted with the mechanical design process when hardware requirements were still being defined, working closely with Cassini’s technical product team to translate system requirements into mechanical solutions.

Iterative process with thorough tests

Through multiple iterations, we led the development of various prototypes using different manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing, vacuum casting, sheet metal, and CNC milling. These prototypes, including both external housing elements and internal mounting structures, underwent thorough testing for functionality, heat flow, and EMC performance

Focus on functionality and regulation

Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with Cassini’s technical team, combining their expertise with ours. This partnership ensured our mechanical solutions met both medical device regulations and system performance requirements.

“Studio Rotor has done excellent work on innovative solutions of both the external and internal mechanical aspects of the Cassini Guidance system.”

Ninta Ginting — VP of Research & development at Cassini Technologies

Thermal & EMI optimizations

Taking the lead on mechanical aspects, we worked with external specialists to develop solutions for airflow, heat dissipation, and electromagnetic interference shielding. The result was an optimized design that effectively supported heat management and electromagnetic interference prevention boosting performance and reliability in the operating room environment while maintaining compliance with medical regulations.

Innovation + compliance

A significant challenge was managing the system’s numerous input and output streams and their accompanying cables while maintaining electromagnetic shielding integrity. We developed innovative solutions for cable routing, component mounting, and EMI protection that met all technical requirements.
